[Application of autotransfusion to oral and maxillofacial surgery].

The risks after homogeneous blood transfusion must be minimized in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The risks include infectious diseases such as posttransfusional hepatitis, adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), etc., incompatibility o hemotypes and antibody formation. Autotransfusion is the transfusion of blood of a patient back into himself. We applied autotransfusion in 45 cases of maxillofacial deformities to prevent the above mentioned diseases and side effects since July 1983. No case of posttransfusional hepatitis was encountered and safety of this method was confirmed.
